A recent survey revealed a steep drop in erectile dysfunction (ED) rates in many African countries, where many are struggling to obtain a proper erection.
But as we look ahead, the challenges in treating erectile dysfunction are growing.
While some may need to start prescribing more than the recommended doses, others are turning to alternative treatments, known as ‘pharmaceuticals’ or ‘pharmacies’.
Pharmacists are increasingly prescribing drugs to treat erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis), as a safe and effective treatment for male impotence.
But the use of these drugs is a topic of growing interest in health-care professionals, with some suggesting that they may be ineffective in treating ED.
“There is an urgent need for drugs to treat erectile dysfunction. They’re not the only alternative. For those that need a little help, there are some medications that can work for most men,” says Dr Nadeem Dastya, a urology expert at the Melbourne Sexual Medicine Institute.
“A recent survey revealed that about 20% of men use some form of therapy to treat their erectile dysfunction. It’s really important to have a doctor’s assessment before prescribing any medication to help them achieve a satisfactory erection.”
Dr Dastya adds that some men may benefit from a low dose of some erectile dysfunction drugs, such as sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis).
“There are drugs that are prescribed to help men with erectile dysfunction. They can also be prescribed to help with premature ejaculation. But if they don’t work for you, or have side effects that you need to be careful about, then they’re not recommended. That’s why it’s important to have a doctor’s assessment before taking any medication,” she explains.
If a man has ED, and is struggling with his erectile dysfunction, a prescription can help. It’s a simple yet effective solution, and there’s no drug that requires a medical consult.
Dr Dastya notes that some of the drugs on the market are still a subject of interest, as they don’t work in the same way as many other treatments.
“There are two main categories of drugs that are used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, which are sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra).
Sildenafil works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, increasing blood flow, and making it easier to get an erection. Tadalafil also improves blood flow to the penile area.
“It can be prescribed to men who have erectile dysfunction, and they’re looking for a little help, but it’s not a recommended treatment,” she adds.
While it can be a useful solution, it is not without risks.
“If you’re considering getting a prescription for Viagra or Cialis, you may want to talk to your doctor to discuss whether it’s appropriate for you,” she adds.
